NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his campaign.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans immediately following his triumph in November.

"The choice rested on the security of my family and the imperative to directing my complete efforts on carrying out the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area renowned for its vibrant cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving there, the community will forever remain inside me and the work I do," he said.

Political Debate

During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting far removed from his previous Astoria home.

Featuring cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

City residents consider these apartments crucial resources as the cost of housing exceeds the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
