What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
