The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second release released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.

Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
