The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
As I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a football he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his career in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back home,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Year and European Arrival
That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his family encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to control his competitive fire, after being shown red at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions
With his current club, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the senior top prize in the future.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
