The Latest Relaxed Game Mode Ignites Intense Discussions Regarding AI Players, Experience Points, and Queue Times

Over the weekend, the game developers introduced a fresh game mode titled Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode mirrors the regular Breakthrough setup but features several key adjustments:

  • Every squad includes only 8 human participants, with the rest filled by AI-controlled opponents.
  • Activities performed by human gamers award full XP, while AI activities provide reduced XP.
  • Only two maps can be played: Siege of Cairo and Empire State map.
  • Features like Dogtags, achievements, and stat tracking are disabled.

So essentially, the playlist lives up to its title: it's a laid-back take of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume it's a good idea, since it gives more options for gamers looking for alternative ways to have fun with the game. However, if video games have taught us anything, it is that you can't please everyone. In other words, a lot of Battlefield 6 players are upset.

Player Reactions: Anger to Praise

"People want real players. Avoid making the mistakes of your competitors," reads one reply to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking concept," comments another. At the same time, in community forums, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are headed with this game," and someone else details everything they consider to be broken in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this bot mode."

On the other hand, amid the criticism, some gamers sharing how much they're liking the recent addition. "It's very fun to practice, real players prevent it from being a complete grind but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit fails to see that there are players who actually go outside and don't play this title all the time. Let them strike a balance," adds another. A response via social media clarifies that as they're "a parent gamer with limited time, this is great for me," while another applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."

Valid Criticisms and Community Feedback

All that said, there are constructive reasons to complain about Casual Breakthrough. Some users have highlighted that it could increase queue times even longer for other modes because of the large amount of playlists in the game already. Similarly, some areas already encounter mostly bots in the current modes. It also seems a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of human gamers, despite it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.

Lastly, one of the biggest complaints is that a previous feature was promised to offer full XP, including AI matches, but that was removed when they attempted to remove bot farms from the mode. So Casual Breakthrough feels like the player base meeting them in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. A different user describes this addition as the devs "dropping the ball so hard, I had great enjoyment in the first couple of days, what prompted them to adjust it?"

Looking Ahead: Will Changes Be Made?

If Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something so far with Battlefield 6, it is that they're listening and acting on feedback. Tasks being too difficult got fixed rapidly, as did the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, should analytics indicates this new playlist is underperforming to their expectations, they will not hesitate to change it again.
