The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.

Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
