The 2026 Formula 1 cars are designed to be lighter, more agile and sustainable compared to current models.

Formula 1 has unveiled the simplified terminology that will be used to describe the intricate details of its upcoming 2026 technical rules.

The championship is introducing what is potentially the largest rules overhaul in its competitive history for the 2026 campaign, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the mandatory use of fully sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a greatly enhanced battery power, necessitating key advancements in the cars' aerodynamics.

During grand prix events, drivers will tactically deploy electrical energy – potentially on qualifying laps – to secure the best result.

Key Technical Innovations

2026 Car Specifications

The next-generation machines will be reduced in size and weight than this year, with a distance between axles cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight reduced by 30kg.

Overall downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately 15-30%, although constructors will inevitably claw this back as they refine their designs.

Air resistance has been reduced by 40%. The vehicles will feature active aerodynamics – both wings will move on the straights to reduce drag and increase straightline speed and revert into place for maximum cornering performance.

Pirelli tyres will keep 18-inch wheel rims, but the rubber compounds will be slimmer, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The revised hybrid units will have an near-equal balance in horsepower generated by the ICE and the electrical system, up from about one-fifth electric power this year.

The ERS setup is made less complex through the deletion of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the complicated and costly component that recovered energy from the turbo.

Every car on the grid will be obliged to compete on fully sustainable fuel, created from organic sources or synthetic production methods.
