Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD released video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
