Citizens have come together across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.

The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are regarded as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on that day.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred around the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to examine the conditions of the plan.

A senior delegate familiar with the discussions indicated that an night meeting of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official explained the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the agreement.

He commented that the talks are "difficult and have not yet produce any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the disparities between the both parties.

Essential Points in Negotiations

  • A permanent truce
  • The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid provision
  • Future administration of the area

Public Sentiment

In the city's public square that day, young Hagar - whose brother endured the assault on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere seems like home now and until each abducted person return not a single person will be secure."

"Once we see all home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can commence heal," she added.

In front of the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their support for the families of the abducted. Israel reports 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Demonstrator one woman stated: "We must do every compromise necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we sincerely need promises that we will be protected."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the conflict to finish in as payment for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the site of the gathering, grieving people came together to honor the dead.

From that location, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.

In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"When the night arrives, the fear comes with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, described.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, especially my little child who rests his face on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."

Health Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had received the corpses of several people by the midday, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated two more fatalities had been transported. A person was killed by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the south region, medics said.
