Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election
New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his decision to back former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after months of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Just last month, the mayor had lashed out at the former governor, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, stating he now intends to support the former governor in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.
“It is crucial to energize the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how vital this race is,” the mayor stated.
Adams continued, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”
Race Dynamics and Recent Events
The election battle has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest globally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.
In a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Earlier this year, the mayor had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.
During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams answered reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which took place right after a contentious mayoral debate.
