An Tale of Unexpected Kindness: When a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor
Back in the year 2006, I traveled to Canberra for a medical school interview. My plan was to book a place to stay upon arrival, however when I arrived, a big convention was in town and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.
As a visitor from Singapore, I considered maybe I could bed down in the airport – but quickly found that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes 24 hours. With no idea quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I caught a city-bound bus and started wandering in the direction of the casino, believing it was a place to spend the evening somewhere operating 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape for nailing the admissions interview the next morning, however, being a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared out of place as a female student spotted me loitering in the city and asked whether I needed help. I recounted my predicament and immediately she offered I could sleep on the ground at her university residence at ANU – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided a meal: one of the filled rolls she had taken home her evening job. I was able to use a hot shower and somewhere safe and secure to sleep.
Looking back, I now understand what a big chance she undertook being a woman allowing a guy she’d just met sleep on her floor. Back then I was in my own unawareness and not even thinking to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she took that chance – yet incredibly thankful.
I didn’t end up study at the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of human compassion. It is my wish life has repaid her act of kindness many times over. The world needs more individuals with such compassion.
